South Asian Art Studies
This is a compulsory subject throughout the course period. Our aim is to help students understand and respect Nepali art in its Buddhist and Hindu context of the Indian subcontinent.

The learning is based on direct observation of the temples, maths, pokaris, statues, paintings, etcetera in and around Kathmandu valley. The students study the iconography and discover how art has developed over the centuries. Students do projects on individual sites and contribute to our major research project and archival. In the 4th Year, a detailed and critical study is made on the contemporary art scene in Nepal - the confrontation between Western and traditional cultures.

Students wishing to specialise in Nepali Art as an Elective in the 3rd and 4th year will carry out individual research projects based on local sites. They will also be introduced to the principles and techniques of Conservation.
